[Article] The iconic romance and marriage between Carole Lombard and Clark Gable, which has received scant scholarly attention, registered a symbolic cultural shift in the New Deal era. Their star images articulated both the utopian impulses and ideological concerns of the “marriage debates” and was heavily influenced by the subversive, improvisational discourse of the romantic comedy films for which they were known.
